Workshop Three
Module 3: The Dispute Strategy
Fixing Errors and Removing Inaccuracies
Once your credit reports are in front of you, the next step is correcting what’s wrong. The dispute process is about removing inaccurate, outdated, or unverifiable information—not “tricking” the system.
Look for accounts that don’t belong to you, wrong balances or dates, duplicate entries, and negative items older than the reporting limits. These are prime candidates for disputes.
You can dispute online, by mail, or both—but always keep copies of what you send and note delivery dates. Credit bureaus typically have 30 days to investigate and respond.
Use a simple Dispute Tracker to log each item, when you disputed it, the bureau or creditor involved, and the outcome. Every corrected line moves you closer to a cleaner report and stronger score.
